Welcome back, fellow adventurers!
When my husband and I tell people we are heading down to the bottom of the Baja California Sur peninsula, everyone always says, “Have fun in Cabo!”
Here is the part first timers miss: Cabo San Lucas vs San Jose del Cabo is not one destination. “Cabo” is three very different areas, and if you book a hotel without knowing the difference, you can end up in a loud party zone when you wanted a quiet, romantic stay. Or the other way around.
Here is how we break down the three areas so you can pick the vibe that actually matches your trip.
Cabo San Lucas: The Action, Fishing, And Party Hub
When most people think of “Cabo,” they are picturing Cabo San Lucas. It sits about 40 minutes southwest of the airport at the very tip of the peninsula. The town was built for tourism, and it is the entertainment hub of the area.
If you want to be in the thick of the party scene, this is where you stay. It is home to Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo, lots of loud and flashy nightlife, and one of Mexico’s largest marinas, with world-class sport fishing.
The vibe: Energetic, loud, tourist-centric, and action-packed
Stay here if: You want to walk to the marina, charter a fishing boat, and dance until 2 AM
Travel Chick’s Tips: Cabo San Lucas is fun. It is not quiet. If nightlife is not the point of the trip, do not book here just because the name is familiar.
San Jose del Cabo: Authentic Charm And History
On the other end of the spectrum is San Jose del Cabo, right near the airport. This is the original town, established by the Spanish in the early 1700s to protect the area from pirates.
San Jose del Cabo has largely resisted overdevelopment and still has that old Mexico charm. Life here centers on the main town square, Plaza Mijares, and it feels much more laid-back than Cabo San Lucas.
The vibe: Relaxed, historic, artistic, and authentic
Stay here if: You want Thursday night art walks, farm-to-table restaurants in the hills, and smaller boutique-style hotels
If you want the quieter Cabo, start here. Hotel walk-through for this town:
The Cabo Corridor: Luxury Resorts And Golf
So what sits between the two towns? The Cabo Corridor. This is a 22-mile stretch of coastal road connecting San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas.
The coastline is lined with large, deluxe oceanfront resorts and golf. It is the “I do not want to leave the property” option.
The vibe: Luxurious, secluded, and resort-focused
Stay here if: You want a big all-inclusive or a round of golf. Plan on a taxi or Uber for any off-resort nightlife or local dining.
Cabo San Lucas vs San Jose del Cabo: Which Should You Book
| If you want… | Book… |
|---|---|
| Marina, fishing, nightlife | Cabo San Lucas |
| Art walks, history, a quieter town | San Jose del Cabo |
| A big resort, golf, stay-on-property days | The Cabo Corridor |
The best area to stay in Cabo is the one that matches your trip, not the one with the most familiar name.
