US Open Courtside: The Day I Watched Tennis Royalty

Sometimes travel throws the most incredible surprises at you! Our NYC stopover turned into an epic tennis adventure I’ll never forget.

When we arrived at Flushing Meadows, I had no idea we were about to witness tennis magic. We were early (typical us, always excited), and suddenly – Ivan Lendl walks out! For anyone who doesn’t know, Lendl was THE tennis icon when I was in high school. He’s retired now, coaching, but he was one of the greats!

But the REAL excitement? Serena and Venus Williams practicing RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER. I mean, come on! Serena practicing just a few feet away from us. Then Venus came out and practiced right next to her. Two of the top women in tennis history just casually warming like it’s no big deal. Their focus and power was a sight to behold.

If you’re heading to the US Open, arrive early and check out the practice courts. You’ll see incredible moments most people miss.

Notable Memories

The day got even better when we snagged amazing seats to watch Mike Bryan and Jack Sock in doubles. And get this – I sat right next to Jack Sock’s aunt and got to hear a few stories about the sacrifices their family made for him to go pro. It made the whole experience feel personal.

NYC + Tennis = THE Perfect Combo

We were exhausted by the end of the day, but it was the best kind of tired. After watching so many incredible players and soaking in the energy of the stadium, we still managed to take in a Broadway show later that night—because, of course, it’s New York!

Pro Tip: Always be open to unexpected adventures. They’re the memories that stick with you forever.

Gregg was rolling his eyes (in a loving way) at my non-stop excitement, but I couldn’t help it. Some moments are just too good not to celebrate!

If you’re planning a trip during US Open season, I highly recommend trying to get tickets. You don’t have to splurge to have an amazing experience. Even the practice courts are unforgettable.
